The industry is evolving and now is the right time to make it happen

The modelling industry is evolving, and the need for male models has grown in the past 10 years. These days men are more aware of their body image and the advantages it brings. If you have the looks, style and determination you could be the next big name in male modelling.

Let’s take a closer look at how male models are making an impact in the modelling world.

Do you have what it takes to be a male model?

Male models need more than just looks. Basic performance skills are essential for a male model. You may have the handsome looks and features of a male model, but without the walk, moves and the ability to pose naturally in front of the camera, then you won’t succeed as a successful male model.

As a male model, you need a lot of self-confidence and you need to be able to put trust in and work well with other professionals such as stylists and photographers. As part of your job as a male model, you will be expected to wear make-up for certain modelling jobs, which is applied naturally so that you look better in front of the camera. Perhaps, most importantly, you need a willingness to be open-minded as this will make you much more appealing to a prospective client or agency.

What sort of male model are you?

Before you start approaching male modelling agencies, you need to establish what you have to offer and make a decision as to what type of modelling you will aim to get into.

For male models, a toned physique is a bonus. Unlike female models, male models can be muscular and have a defined physique – in fact, if you are very muscular then fitness modelling may be a good option for you.

If you are not comfortable advertising underwear, then decide early on that you wont take on jobs advertising them. Understanding your limits may cost you a few jobs early on, but it will also help you define your niche and help you in your male modelling career.

    Choose your niche

There are a number of different categories of male modelling, including catalogue, sports clothing, advertising, health and fitness, through to high fashion (if you have a more slender body type). There are modelling opportunities for niche markets such as men over forty, big and tall men, and man of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

    High fashion modelling

Like for female models, high fashion agencies have very specific requirements for all of their male models.

When signing male models, high fashion agencies would normally expect a high-profile model to be at least 6 foot 1 in height to cater to industry demands – model height is very important on the catwalk! However, some agencies do take on slightly shorter models for high-end men’s fashion magazines.

Typically, high fashion agencies look for male models that have a lean body, structured jaw, perfect complexion and a very striking look.

Even if you do fit the mould, high fashion is a tough area of the fashion industry to break into. You may also find that what a model agency is looking for one-year may be very different the next year – what is in fashion one season may fall out of fashion the next.

As a high fashion male model, you will be expected to travel, even if you are a model based here in London. New York and Paris are just a couple of the glamorous destinations that you will be expected to visit.

    Commercial modelling

A commercial model is hired by a company to advertise a particular product or service of theirs. The model is hired because their look and personality perfectly represent the market the company is aiming for.

Commercial model agencies don’t often have strict requirements for the male models they hire because every product and advertisement is different. However, as a commercial male model, you will be expected to play more of a role than that of a fashion model as commercial models will often have to pose or photographed using the product.

This is where basic performance and acting ability helps. You might be asked to pose using the latest male grooming products or designer jewellery. Opportunities for commercial models have also grown over recent years as a lot of advertising is now online, and therefore more affordable.

    For mature male models

Men have always had a longer modelling career expectancy than their female counterparts. In advertising, more mature male models are often used to suggest luxury and sophistication.

    Real models

Real models are in demand with more and more unique brands and clothing ranges – to suit all styles of tastes – looking for the perfect model to showcase them.

Fashion labels at every level are getting more creative and are looking for models that reflect their brand to promote them; from the catwalk all the way to small independent online companies.

This has meant that real model agencies are becoming more established and freelance online castings are a great source of male modelling job opportunities for those who have probably been overlooked in the past.

    Catalogue models

With more and more high street brands, designer brands and small boutique retailers now selling their clothes online, the demand for catalogue models has risen.

A male catalogue model will be seen throughout a website or catalogue wearing the clothes in a company’s male collection. This allows people browsing the collection to get a better idea of what the clothes will look like when worn.

A few years ago, there used to be a typical look and style requested by an agency when signing a male catalogue model, but these days individual personality and style is much more important. There are also more opportunities for plus-sized males.

For male models with a muscular physique

Agencies do not have specific guidelines on what they are looking for in a male fitness model, however, fitness models are required to have a specific body shape. Male fitness models must be very toned and have strong muscle definition. Agencies also require their models to look healthy and their muscle definition to look realistic.

There are online, print, magazines and advertising opportunities for male fitness models and you could be expected to advertise healthy living, fitness related products or services for example.
